Chemistry from North Dakota State University in 1997 before getting his Ph.D.
in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on thermal and transport
properties of nanocomposite materials, especially in the areas of
thermoelectric energy generation, gas barrier and fire prevention. He won the NSF CAREER and 3M Untenured
Faculty awards in 2007, the Dow 2009 Young Faculty Award, the 2010 Carl A.
Dahlquist Award, the 2013 E. D. Brockett Professorship, the 2014 Texas A&M
Engineering Experiment Station(TEES) Fellowship, 2015 Dean of Engineering
Excellence Award and 2016 TEES Senior Research Fellow for his work in these
areas. He has published over 140 journal
papers and filed several patents. He has graduated 21 PhD students and mentored
more than 50 undergraduate students in his laboratory. Dr. Grunlan also holds
joint appointments in Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering. He is an
Editor for Journal of Materials Science, Associate Editor for Green Materials
and serves on the International Advisory Board for Macromolecular Rapid
Communications and Macromolecular Materials and Engineering.

题目:New
Halogen Free Flame Retardants for PU Foams
报告人:Dr.
Sabyasachi Gaan, Swiss Federal Lab. for Materials Science and Technology(EMPA),
Switzerland
时间:2018年6月13日 上午10:20-11:20
地点:化学馆321
Brief introduction:
Dr.
Sabyasachi Gaan obtained his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry at University of
California, Davis in 2007. Now, he is a group leader and Senior Scientist in
the Chemistry Group at Laboratory of Advanced Fibers and Polymers, EMPA, St.
Gallen, Switzerland. His research interests include the development of advanced
materials from bulk polymers and fibers and the synthesis of new functional
polymers and monomers such as thermally stable polymers(Polyimide), flame
retardant monomers, hydrophilic/hydrophobic block polymers, antimicrobial
monomers, etc. One part of his research concerns the synthesis of phosphorus
containing cationic organo gels, which include chemical and physical property
evaluation of their structure, application as drug delivery. His major
scientific achievements include the synthesis of organophosphorus compounds as
flame retardant additives, which led his team winning the Empa Innovation 2016
Award for new flame retardant. Besides, his team has been involved in
understanding how organophosphorus compounds thermally decompose and further
interact with organic species(fuel) in bulk of polymer as well as in the gas
phase. He has published over 28 research papers in international peer-reviewed
journals and patents in the last 5 years, such as Macromolecules, Polymers,
Coatings, ect.

Brief introduction:
Professor
Serge Bourbigot received his Ph.D. degree at University of Lille, France in
1993. Now, he is the head of Research at ENSCL of the University of Lille,
France. His research interests and experiences are mainly focused on flame
retardancy engineering of polymers and textiles; the development of new flame
retardant formulations for polymeric materials; the kinetic of degradation of
materials, pyrolysis, heat and mass transfer in intumescent materials during
combustion and solid state NMR of flame retarded polymeric materials and of
nanocomposites. Professor Serge Bourbigot is one of the most active scientists
in the field of flame retardancy. He is recognized as one of the most
influencing and inspiring leading scientist in intumescent materials and their
flame retardant mechanism. He has published over 300 papers in peer review
journals, chapters in books and in technological journals and has edited 6
scientific books. Now, he is a sub-editor of Polymer for Advanced technologies
and Journal of Fire Sciences, and also is
currently on the editorial board of dozens of international flame retardancy
chemistry journals.
